The 2010 Arts Council Applause Award was presented to Selma Hollander, and her late husband Stanley Hollander, both longtime arts donors, patrons, and educators. In addition to holding Lansing Symphony Orchestra season tickets for over two decades and establishing more than a dozen arts endowments at the MSU in the College of Music, the Department of Theater and the Department of Art and Art History, the Hollanders have also gifted multiple works of art for public display, and have acted as public ambassadors for the arts in the Greater Lansing area by attending events and encouraging others’ participation in the arts.

Business Arts Award Winner: Jackson National Life Insurance Company

The 2010 Arts Council Business Award was presented to Jackson National Life Insurance Company. Tony Pasant, the company’s founder, and his wife Shirley began the company’s longstanding tradition of arts support in mid-Michigan when he gave his name and a large donation to the Pasant Theatre at MSU’s Wharton Center for Performing Arts. In addition to a beautiful display of more than 200 pieces of original artwork in their corporate headquarters in Lansing, Jackson National’s Community Fund has worked to provide more than one million dollars and in-kind services annually to various local non-profit organizations including All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre and Keep Learning…Our Future Depends On It for arts and cultural education initiatives.

“Both award recipients model the Arts Council’s mission to lead, advocate for, and advance the arts in the capital region. Their dedication is exemplary and we cannot thank them enough for their commitment to the arts and to arts education,” said Arts Council Executive Director Leslie Donaldson.
