In this episode, host Robin Miner-Swartz talks with musician Mikeyy Austin about his music, his love for Lansing and his belief that arts and culture drive everything and help create strong and supportive spaces that are for everyone. They dive into his history and love for making music and building community, his dreams for Greater Lansing, 517 Juneteenth Weekend and a whole lot more.
Meet Mikeyy
Mikeyy Austin is a Lansing hip-hop artist, musician and bandleader with a range of musical influences. His roots as a teenage church musician translate as he performs with a live band, including drums, keys, bass and guitar. Combining elements of soul and jazz. He has also created memorable Lansing concerts, such as “The Black Arts Matter Celebration” and “A Night at The Soul Lounge.” In 2017, Mikeyy released his debut album, L I F T E D, to critical acclaim.
Mikeyy released a mixtape titled“Art4Sale” and a handful of singles in 2018. In 2019 he released a three-song EP titled “Songs About Whatever.” Mikeyy released his LP, ‘Greenhouse’, in May of 2020. In addition to his work as a musician, Mikeyy also is the director of OurSpace (517), which produces 517Juneteenth and other initiatives that work to highlight local art and artists and cultivate robust entrepreneurial districts in partnership with people, organizations, businesses and local groups.
