Arts Council Announces 2023/2024 Art in the Sky Billboards
The Arts Council is pleased to announce the billboard artists for the 2023/2024 Art in the Sky Billboard Project. This project is a well-loved annual public art installation that spans the skies from downtown Lansing and beyond, featuring the art of local artists throughout the region for everyone to enjoy.
Now in its fourteenth year, the Art in the Sky Project is a collaboration with Adams Outdoor Advertising and Greater Lansing artists, and it has grown into a beloved and recognizable feature on the region’s skyline that is a delight to residents and tourists alike.
The billboards provide diverse public art that is accessible to all, creating a digital gallery in the sky that allows area artists to show their work collectively and also providing a marketing opportunity for them to highlight their individual entrepreneurial pursuits. More than 30 submissions were received this year, and an esteemed panel of area residents, with backgrounds in the arts and community arts endeavors, helped to select the final six for display in and outside the region.
“The billboard project is one of our favorite programs, and the community loves it as well,” said Arts Council executive director, Meghan Martin. “They are a great example of providing public art that is accessible to all; plus, they allow us to showcase the work of our artists from a new perspective for visitors and residents alike,” Martin said.
The 2023/2024 billboard project will feature each of the artist’s work individually for two months on multiple boards throughout Greater Lansing from December 2023 – November 2024, with the first billboard going live on Dec. 18. Additionally, there will be a two-week splash of all six artist billboards that will run simultaneously beginning January 2024 and again in December 2024.
The 2023/2024 billboard awardees include the following regional artists: Mary Ablao, Deborah Ferhanbach, Kelly Hansen, Sarah Hillman, Lucy Synk, Jennifer Taggart-Wilson
“The billboards have become such a recognized and loved part of Greater Lansing’s landscape that they are a part of the fabric of our region. They create a sense of place and contribute to our community’s creative placemaking efforts in the region,” said Martin.
To date, the Arts Council’s “Art in the Sky” initiative has featured the works of nearly 80 of our region’s individual artists, bringing art to the masses via the medium of outdoor advertising. To see this year’s billboards and to learn more about the “Art in the Sky” program click here.
