Arts Council of Greater Lansing Awards Katie Woodhams $1000 Individual Artist Grant

The Arts Council of Greater Lansing is excited to announce Katie Woodhams as our 2014 Individual Artist Grant recipient. Katie has been a member of the Arts Council for three years; she holds degrees in fine art and zoology and is actively involved in the Lansing arts community.

Katie’s project is one of healing through art, focusing on the life of her son Ethan who was born severely disabled and lived only six years. Katie will create six encaustic paintings, each representing a significant milestone in Ethan’s life.

Katie’s goal with the project is to embark on a path that encourages her own healing and aids others who have experienced similar life situations and loss.

Katie’s proposal notes, “This project will allow me to focus on creating a body of work that has the capacity to help me remember Ethan’s life while experiencing personal healing at the same time.”

The Arts Council takes great pride in being able to award funds to our members through this grant program. Currently in its sixth year, the program supports individual artists in the Lansing area, providing them $1000 with which to create an artistic project that not only showcases their work, but also has a public component that offers them the opportunity to engage with the community artistically.

A peer review panel selected Katie’s proposal based upon the merit of her proposed project and work samples.

The work produced for Katie’s project will be on display at an exhibition to be held at Community Mental Health Offices for Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties from Nov. 10 – Dec. 19, 2014, with an opening reception on Nov. 7 at the Fenner Nature Center on Mt. Hope Rd.

“Our Individual Artist Grant allows us to draw attention to our local artists, help them grow their talent and build connections in the community,” says Debbie Mikula, executive director. “We are so pleased to present this award to Katie, and we look forward to the culmination of her project.”
