Arts Council of Greater Lansing Awards $5,000 to Local Individual Artists
LANSING, Mich., May 10, 2010 – The Arts Council of Greater Lansing is pleased to announce the selection of five local artists as recipients of the Arts Council’s Individual Artist Grant program with cash awards of $1,000 each. Each recipient was selected based upon the merit of their proposed project.
“This is the second year of this grant program, which is the first of its kind to support individual artists in the greater Lansing region,” Executive Director Leslie Donaldson said. “It will aid our artistic community, provide the public with greater arts educational opportunities, and increase support to our local economy. We are thrilled to support these talented individuals.” Award recipients in the emerging artist category are Linda Beeman and Janel Schultz.
Linda Beeman, an Ovid resident and printmaker, will create a series of Japanese woodblock prints for exhibition. The exhibition, “12 Views of the Shiawassee,” will include a demonstration of the moku hanga technique and collaborate with state agencies concerned with the conservation of the Shiawassee River including Friends of the Shiawassee and North Oakland County Headwater’s Land Conservancy. The public exhibition is planned for late Fall 2010.
Janel Schultz, a Lansing-based sculptor and painter, will produce an exhibition of wall-relief work combining sculpture, painting, and recycled materials. The work will involve a collection of sounds of humans mimicking animals that are activated by motion detectors triggered by the movement of viewers. This playful exhibit will take place at Basement 414 in Lansing from Aug. 6 through the first week of September.
Three local artists were also awarded grants for their projects in the established artist category.
Lansing visual artist Barbara Hranilovich will create new works in encaustic and hold a demonstration/workshop of encaustic technique at the Lansing Art Gallery during the fall of 2010. Images of the works will be displayed along with an explanation of the process at the gallery, and posted to a blog at, http://www.hranilovich.com. Hranilovich will also be demonstrating her work at Reach Studio Art Center on May 13, 2010.
Diane Newman of Lansing will choreograph a new work, “Everybody Dance Now,” involving 40-45 community dancers, ages 10-80 with varying skill levels. The dance will be performed as part of the annual Community Dance Project, a collaboration between Lansing Community College and Happendance, on Aug. 4 and 5 at LCC’s Dart Auditorium and on Aug. 7 at the Lansing JazzFest in Old Town. Matthew Boonstra of Okemos will create “Casting Realities,” an exhibit of sculpture using the process of life casting. The exhibit will take place at the Lansing Art Gallery in November 2010, and will be based on research about industrial workers in greater Lansing.
