“Features of Michigan” an Exhibition by Angela Hamilton

Meet Angela

Angela Hamilton is an award-winning plein-air artist and the first artist to win a professional development mini-grant through the Michigan Council of Arts and Cultural Affairs. Angela was born in Windsor and grew up in Michigan. She began her art venture as a teen, working in pastels and graphites and drawing mostly portraits. A graduate from Michigan State University with bachelor degrees in general business and advertising, she was not happy with her assigned career direction and was compelled to work in art.

After attending a few drawing courses at Oakland Community College, she started her career in desktop publishing and later her talents promoted her to graphic artist. Angela designed training manuals and promotional items for the Big 3 automotive companies. In order to stay home with Baby, she started a freelance graphic arts business, but family life and a new house became very demanding and drew her away from her business.

After 10 years of putting her art career on hold to raise a family, Angela decided to launch a new career into fine-art painting. In 2011, Angela continued her art studies at the Flint Institute of Arts. The Flint Institute of Arts included Angela’s painting, “Beach Play” in the 2013 catalog.

Currently, Angela works in acrylics but is also exploring other techniques and mediums such as daily painting, still-life painting and pastels and graphites. Her piece, “The Herb Greenery,” won an honorable mention in the 2018 Saginaw Art Museum’s Great Lakes Bay En Plein Air Festival.

Artist Statement

It’s all about emotion, expression and freedom when I create art. And Michigan provides a treasure trove of scenery, wildlife and seasons to appreciate and display on canvas. My work has to include my need to enjoy the outdoors, whether through acquiring reference photos on a hike or en plein air painting. Nature is dramatic and art should be too. My use of lighting, contrast and vibrant color convey my point of view and emotion from the scene in front of me. Painting is where an artist finds beauty, and it is all around me.

Opening Reception

Join us at the Arts Council for an opening reception on Oct. 12, 2018. The event begins at 5 p.m. and runs until 7 p.m. Come meet Angela and talk to her about her work. Light refreshments will be served.
