Call for Michigan Artists

New Sense of Place Public Art Project in the Capital City

LANSING, Mich., February 19, 2016 –The Arts Council of Greater Lansing and the City of Lansing announces a call for Michigan Artists for the Museum Drive Arts Impact Project. Funded by the City of Lansing Sense of Place Program, the project will be located on Michigan Avenue in downtown Lansing, just blocks from the state Capitol, and will act as a gateway to the cultural district on Museum Drive. 

“As leaders in the Lansing-area creative placemaking movement, we are so proud to be involved in the City of Lansing’s Sense of Place Program,” says Arts Council Executive Director Deborah E. Mikula. “This new Arts Impact Project puts art at the forefront of placemaking and economic development in Lansing, and that is both exciting and innovative,” Mikula said.

The program seeks proposals for the creation of an engaging, prominent public artwork that will serve as a welcoming beacon to the Lansing-area cultural district. Four cultural institutions, Impression 5 Science Center; Riverwalk Theatre; R.E. Olds Transportation Museum and La Fille Gallery all reside within the cultural district, and the chosen art work will serve, in part, to brand their shared location. The project presents an excellent opportunity for a Michigan artist’s work to be prominently showcased in Michigan’s capital.

The call for artists is open to all professional artists and/or artist-led teams, based in Michigan. Interested artists must have demonstrated experience in innovative placemaking and are welcome to propose work in media and materials that meet the criteria as it is detailed in the official RFQP.

The commission budget for the project is $71,500 USD and is inclusive of all artist’s fees, travel, design, engineering, insurance, permits, fabrication, labor, shipping and installation.
