A Few Words From Debbie–The Times, They Are a Changing!

Dear Arts Council Friends,

My life’s work has been dedicated to supporting the cultural environment here in Lansing, throughout Michigan and in our nation. My belief is that by empowering our artists and cultural leaders, increasing the capacity of our institutions to plan and envision their future, our collective impact will make a profound difference in the communities where we live, work and visit.

Over the past few months I have taken time to think clearly and strategically about what is “next” for me and how I can further impact my life’s work. After consulting, engaging, and having the full support of my family and a few close colleagues, I have decided to tender my resignation as executive director of the Arts Council of Greater Lansing effective May 24, 2019.

A new opportunity presented itself earlier this year to again work within a statewide cultural organization, and I have just finalized negotiations and accepted the leadership position of the Michigan Library Association.

As I leave the Arts Council, I truly believe that we are moving in an inspiring new direction and have been for many years thanks to a dedicated board and extremely passionate and capable staff. I feel comfortable and assured that all I believed possible when I came on board in 2013 will continue to resonate in our region.

The good news in all of this…I leave you in the most capable of hands. This past Tuesday, the Arts Council board of directors met and unanimously appointed Meghan Martin as the interim executive director. She is another true arts advocate, and will bring her own unique style and skills to the table. I am grateful for her friendship and leadership.

I hope you know that I will miss you all immensely, but I know that the strong bonds and friendships we’ve formed will continue to resonate in my life and guide me in my work.

I won’t be far, and I will be watching to make sure you all keep bringing as much art and creativity into our region as you possibly can. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times…exceptional talent lives here and we are changing our landscape and the quality of lives every time something is created! I will continue to be your most loyal and passionate advocate.
